How GIS Visualisation can help in Flood Management

In India one of the biggest challenges road commuters face is the structural failures found scattered across the majority of the country’s roadways. Commonly known as Potholes, these inconsistencies in our roads are a cause for not only accidents but also water stagnation, automobile damage and spread of disease as an effect of water stagnation. Heavy Rainfall is but one factor that causes the deterioration of our country’s roads. Technology can help us counter the damage that Rainfall causes. GIS Visualisation of a city’s roadways will allow the officials to not only track the most majorly affected areas due to rainfall, but also do analyses to a certain extent allowing for decision making based on the data collected.

Unfortunately rainfall is not the only cause for these structural damages. Lack of proper road maintenance, use of poor quality raw materials and defects liability periods being ignored are but some of the major reasons for this issue. In a move to correct these issues, the Karnataka government directed the BBMP to hold road contractors accountable for the maintenance of roads. With this move it has been announced that the names of the roads falling under the defects liability period and the details of the contractors in question will be made public shortly.

In relation to this senior BBMP officials, along with the mayor, deputy mayor and the IT team sat down with officials from our company, VizExperts. Discussions were held along the lines of our work related to 3D data collected from various databases in order to help the government and civic bodies take real time decisions in times of crisis. Using our 3D GIS platform GeorbIS, we can help in the 3D visualisation of the data available, allowing high level analysis and simulation models. This in turn will ensure that all the voluminous data available can be successfully transformed into intelligent decision making. 

To that end, the BBMP is deciding on a project wherein VizExperts could help map the topology and assess the drain capacity in different areas against amount of rainfall received. This will help the officials of civic bodies predict the possibility of flooding to a reasonable extent and take decisions accordingly.
