How GIS Mapping can help in Flood Management

Below is a loosely edited transcript of the above article.

As the city of Bangalore, has been suffering from frequent flooding, can we reduce the damages using Geographical Information System (GIS)? According to Geographical experts it is possible using GIS Mapping.

According to the CEO and Co-founder of VizExperts, Praveen Bhaniramka, GIS technology will be helpful in preparing government agencies during times of Floods.

Population density, Rain samples, infrastructure status of the city, drainage facility information can be fetched using GIS technology. By deploying sensors in particular locations we can track inward and outward flow of rainwater in the city. By using these sensors the officials can map the situation during floods and can take decisions accordingly. This transformation of data into decision making is made possible by our 3D GIS platform, GeorbIS.

Every year during the Monsoon season, flooding occurs. Information and statistics is available with government entities. But, the utilization of that information in taking decisions is not happening. For example, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) is capable of providing accurate information about weather, forecast, precautions and natural disasters. But this data is not being used to take intelligent decisions.

How is GIS helpful?

  • • Can form a map on areas where Flooding occurs frequently using GIS.
  • • Using geographical aspects can rebuild a sewage drains to ensure smooth water flow.
  • • Can allow the creation of flood simulation models.
  • • Can allow the mapping of evacuation routes by use of imagery captured.
  • • If weather forecast is available then the government officials can take appropriate decisions based on the available maps and locations.
